Slate Information

Balach Blue

Balach Blue is a lightly textured blue black slate with a speckling of small inclusions which was originally laid down in the mid cambrian geological period. The small inclusions of pyrite are harmless and do not oxidise.

Balach Blue is produced to our own specification especially for the projects which require a heavier slate, usually in Scotland or the North of England. The quality control selection of the slates is higher than many other "heavies" resulting in less time spent grading slates on site.

The slate is sourced fom the family run business which was established over 45 years ago by the father and uncle of the present owner. The slate is extracted via mining rather than the traditional open quarry technique, one of only three such operations in Spain.

This extraction techique, which currently utilises 6 tunnels ranging from 200 metre to over 1 kilometre long, optimises the amount of useable slate that is recovered from this excellent deposit. This not only ensures a competitively priced roofing slate but minimies the operations overall impact on the environment.
